How to translate MapOSMatic in your language

The preferred way of contacting us about translations is to subscribe to the maposmatic-dev mailing list. All discussions around MapOSMatic, its development and the internationalization effort happens there. Traffic is average, so don't be afraid to subscribe. You can also contact us directly at [email protected], but we really prefer you use the mailing-list, where you can discuss with other contributors.

This page explains what in MapOSMatic needs to be translated to make MapOSMatic available in a new language, and how you can translate it.

How to translate?

MapOSMatic uses Gettext for internationalization, which is a recognized standard. To make the handling of the .po files which contain the translations, the main translation efforts are performed on the Transifex web site.

To help with translation, first you need to create a cost-free basic account on the Transifex site and then select the maposmatic project there. Any translations you add or modify there are pulled once daily into the source tree.

What needs translation?

  • The web site: as you can imagine, the web site has some contents that needs to be translated (basically all the text you see on screen in the various pages). You need to translate the strings in the maposmatic resource on Transifex.
  • The generated map: here, two things are needed:
    1. Translate the amenities names, again on the ocitysmap resource on Transifex.
    2. Tell us how street indeces are handled for your language, for example if it is needed to put some street prefixes after the street names like in Italian or French. The corresponding code is in ocitysmap/i18n.py. But if you don't know how to code this in Python, just tell us how this is done and we will code it. The full details about the internationalization support is given on the page i18n_support.
